The Sanusi of Cyrenaica

Excellent concise and engaging account of the Sanusi in Cryenaica. Contains a basic narrative of the growth of the movement and its spread across the Hijaz, Egypt, Libya, Chad and Sudan. However, the bulk of the book concentrates on the importance of the movement in Cyrenaica. It is especially strong on the modus vivendi that was established between the Senusi and the Turkish and then the conflicts with the Italians (1911-1917 and 1923-32).The author also uses his training as an anthropologist and his experience as British Political Officer in Cyrenaica from 1942 to go into some detail on the nature of the tribes in Cyrenaica and how the Sanusi movement interacted with this social organisation.Evans-Pritchard unashamedly takes the side of the Sanusi in the conflicts with the Italians, but is fair enough to note that their treatment of the Sanusi was in line with the treatment of some other native populations by other colonial powers at the same time.
