The story of Pickwick's illustrators reads like the plot of a Dickens novel! Robert Seymour had the original idea of producing illustrations for a fictional sporting club, and persuaded his own publisher to employ the young and impoverished Dickens to write accompanying 'notes'. Dickens managed to reverse the process. He knew nothing about sport but liked the idea of a club; he would write 'sketches' about a literary club; Seymour would tailor his work accordingly. The project spiralled out of his control and Seymour committed suicide shortly after producing an illustration called 'The Dying Clown' (pp.31). Robert Buss was employed next; he produced 3 plates which were considered uninspired when converted to steel engravings. He was dismissed, and suffered lifelong disappointment, but remained an avid fan. When Dickens died, he painted the famous 'Dickens' Dream', of the author surrounded by his characters. Halbot Browne under the pseudonym of 'Phiz' was employed to finish the project, and remained ever after as Dickens' illustrator. The volume in hand is of interest because it retains the Seymour illustrations as well as those by Phiz, with forty-three charming steel engraved plates including the frontispiece and illustrated title page to the original edition and a second title-page to this edition. The buyer will be able compare the relative merits of each illustrator. (The Buss plates are absent in later editions). This is the 1837 Edition retaining some early issue points as follows: frontispiece footstool changed to 6 stripes; title page sign changed 'Weller' from'Veller' but signed 'Phiz fecit'; footnote present on pp.9; ''holding' changed from 'hodling' pp.260; signature misprint remains 'X2' pp.261; page number 303 now complete; 'S. Veller' still uncorrected pp.342 line 5; 'Pickwick' heading still misspelled as 'Picwkick' pp.375; 'his friends' changed 'this friends' pp. 400 line 21. This volume is thick Royal 8vo. xiv + [ii] + 609pp. Very good clean t

The Penguin edition is worth the extra few bob that you pay over and above the cheap Kindle editions. Good introduction, all the illustrations in the right place. This is not where I try to persuade you to read Pickwick, this is where I tell you that you owe it to yourself not to download an inferior freebie.

I really enjoyed the Brilliance Audio production. It's not my favourite Dickens but I got engrossed in this version, which really brings out the humour.
