By Mithrandir
Brideshead Revisited is in many ways an emotionally draining read.Charles Ryder spends his youth enchanted by the wonder and intoxicating freedom of his new-found independence and friends, no more so than the beguiling Sebastian Flyte. But convention and the theological oppressions constricting all areas of Sebastian’s life leads to a long journey of bitter emotional isolation. Charles’ shocking religious conversion at the end of the novel is as raw and powerful as Winston Smith’s brainwashing in Orwell’s 1984.Ultimately, this is a beautiful novel and Waugh’s prose is possibly the most lyrical and poetic ever written in the English language. Perhaps only Nabokov can rival him.'The hot spring of anarchy rose from depths where there was no solid earth, and burst into sunlight – a rainbow in its cooling vapours – with a power the rocks could not suppress.'

By Chris Pearson
I hadn't read this novel for 30 years but it's still beautiful, sentimental, lyrical, and nostalgic for a time usurped by Hooper, and all the change he brought to post-war Britain and English society.Superbly written, with exceptional dialogue, and beautifully narrated by Charles Ryder. If you have seen Jeremy Irons play the role in the world-class ITV series of 1981 you'll hear his voice echo throughout these pages. The critics never regarded this as Waugh's best novel, but I disagree. It's his most enduring novel and a classic you can't ignore.

'Brideshead Revisited' is undoubtedly a literary classic, a bittersweet tale that defies easy categorization: war, romance, aristocratic luxury, religion, familial conflict... Which themes are more important will perhaps depend on the individual reader, as Evelyn Waugh admits in his introduction. When I first read the novel in my late teens, after having been introduced by a friend to the equally excellent television series, I saw it primarily as a tribute to the joys of youth and a warning of their ephemeral nature. Now in my young-adulthood, it is Waugh's presentation of the complexity of male-female relations that strikes me most strongly. Waugh's use of language in this novel is famously eloquent, and his characters are iconic. This novel is a masterful commemoration of an England that once was, warts and all. I cannot emphasize strongly enough how important it is for every child of England, here or overseas, to read this novel.
