OK, I admit it: I was disappointed. Where are the great speeches, the standpoints, the moral, ethical and legal arguments? Where is the drama? I was told that this is a 'great' play. Not in my view, and when, at the end, the three knights step out of character and appeal to modern audiences, what little tension is just washed away with an air of indifference. Plays on such a subject that is inherently dramatic should have drama: this one doesn't. Robert Bolt did a vastly superior job with his "A Man for all Seasons." Same problem (Church v. State) but a different age.
