Great portrait of the post war period in Italy - a romantic story, too!

The fate of the hero when the war is over

Most Italians know about this book. It is important because it tells the truth (in fictional form) about the complicated fate awaiting some of the Partisan heroes who found themselves in trouble after the end of World War II. I am going to do a complete spoiler here. Bube (who has the nickname of Avenger) is egged on to take physical revenge on some of the surviving Italian fascists. But when he does this, aged just 18, he has to flee abroad (to escape arrest and imprisonment). He returns within a couple of years, only to be sentenced to 14 years. The only thing that keeps him going is his girlfriend (la ragazza), Mara, who is two years younger than him. In fact, they hardly know each other - having spent just a couple of days in each other's company before deciding to get engaged. Is she going to stand by him? Yes. Something in her character, even though she is barely more than a child, tells her that she must help him survive. For all of its historical honesty, the book is a tough read at times - meandering for large tracts and not always able to make its impressive characters seem very interesting. [Read in Italian}
