Far from Desolate

As this story progressed, I began to wonder whether we had got it wrong when we talk about the Aubrey / Maturin novels. In this one, I was seriously considering changing my allegence to Maturin / Aubrey. This is not to say there is no "action". In particular, the chase of the Leopard by the Dutch 74, though the stormy seas of the forties, off Antarctica, was as exciting as anything Patrick O'Brian has written (remember though this is as far as I have got in the series, there will no doubt be more excitement in later novels).However the skillful "management" of American and French spies by Maturin was a tour-de-force; more drawn out than the battles, but the tension never drops during the span of the novel.On final comment, I usually interpose a few other books between each new O'Brian. In this case however, the hanging ending of Desolation Island led me immediately to the Fortunes of War!!
