Great historical novel

"La chimera" is a story of a young woman in a small village near Milan at the beginning of 1600, accused of being a witch. It is based on a true story and Vassalli described very well the social environment: superstition, ignorance, enviousness. It described in detail also the Spanish administration which was in power, its corrupted governance and soldiers. And the suffocating presence of clergy, made of many fanatic priests and very few illuminated people. Why I liked? Well as per Vassalli message, the past helps to understand the present by comparison, many societies are still in the dark of ignorance so it is easier to understand fanaticism, but also ever corruption and enviousness (possibly more difficult to eradicate) . Actually 400 years are not many in the story of human kind.

lost the plot

Too many digressions mean this story plods along and is very heavy-going. You're interested in finding out about Antonia and you get little morsels here and there - I'm sorry to say i gave up half way. Apparently that's when the story kicks off but you shouldn't really have to wait that long for a story to get going, should you?
