The author has written a, dare one say impressionistic, biography of his father. It is not strictly in time sequence but that is no negative criticism. Rich in anecdotes, this intimate book lets you get to know Renoir, his opinions, and the people in his life. A must for anyone who loves his art.

This is a lovingly written, richly anecdotal biography of the painter Renoir, father of film director Jean Renoir. Packed with intimate memories, domestic incidents and reported speech, it plunges the reader straight into family life Chez Renoir. By the end, you will feel you know more, perhaps, than is strictly decent about Renoir the man, but less than you might have hoped about Renoir the artist.There is, I feel, too much about Renoir's various social indiosyncracies and too little about his life as an artist. His son feels his task is to help the reader understand what his father was like "as a man". There is, ineveitably, a fair bit about events in his career buried amongst the endless shaggy dog stories, but if you are seeking to understand Renoir's work, you'll need to look elsewhere.Well, you might say, this isn't intended to be a book about painting, it is a man's biography of his father. However, as a biography, it doesn't stand alone. If Renoir was not a world-famous Impressionist, we would lose patience with the bitty, distracting nature of the text. While Jean Renoir gives, it seems, every instance he can remember that he thinks will illumninate the mind and character of the Great Man, the many parts do not make a coherent whole. One cannot blame the translator; the flaw is clearly in the writing.
