A treasure chest of surprises

This is a very strange book, with a story that is complicated and hard to follow. BUT - that really doesn't matter. Carroll apparently wrote it as a way of piecing together various thoughts over the years, so just ignore the fragmentary nature of it and decide to dip in. You'll find it's full of strange ideas and flashes of wit, odd comments, philosophical ideas and surreal and dreamlike images - and some curious verses, too.Personally if I'm feeling low I have found that reading a bit of "Sylvie and Bruno" cheers me up. I suppose it opens my mind up to the great variety and interest there is in life, and suggests to me how to use my brain to explore and master (and get fun out of) the world - and perhaps other worlds too... There has never been another book like this - it's really unique. And it's well worth buying.

A glimpse at the workings of an extraordinary psyche

Lewis Carroll himself confessed that this is a jigsaw puzzle pieced together out of disparate thoughts caught on scraps of paper over a lifetime. When you're feeling 'eery', that place between sleep and waking, that's when you can slip into fairyland. Or is it your own subconcious? Borders are blurred, marvels uncovered and innocence fades as the protagonists grow up and then drift back into childhood. This is a book of disarming complexity, littered with riddles, surprises and sadness. If you've a tendency towards eeriness then you may find delicious satisfaction in this surprisingly adult story.

This is a book I return to now and then, just to recapture that childlike wonder that Carroll masters so well. The contrast of the adorable fairy children and their beautiful little absudities, against the strangeness of the real world of Carroll's time and culture which seems alien to a modern reader, make for a surreal story that still manages to hit its simple theme on the head: love conquers all.
