The Hero with a Thousand Feathers

The stories from issues #1-6 of Howard’s second (!) 2015 series are collected, along with the second (!) Squirrel Girl #6 (of 2015) as Howard the Duck Vol. 1: Duck Hunt.This is a direct continuation of the previous Howard the Duck volume - Howard the Duck Volume 0: What the Duck? - and wraps up the outstanding plot from the Collector’s story in that issue, as well as addressing some left over from the 1970’s series.As I said in my review of that previous volume, I was there in the 1970s for the first Howard the Duck, and while the style of this series is a bit different than the original, this is still the same Howard, just older and a bit less excitable, and after all the cosmic events of the previous volume, he finally just wants to go home.The road home is not a straight path however, and armed with the Other Infinity Gauntlet from the previous volume, Howard and Tara set off for Florida and the Nexus of All Realities, where they find a couple of super-villains trying to harness it and conquer the world, after which a female duck and female raccoon arrive, fleeing from the Collector, with an entire issue of back-story of their own, before Howard has to become the Cosmic Hero one last time and join with the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Silver Surfer to take down the Collector, the Stranger, Galactus, and more alien bounty hunters than George Lucas could fit into a bar.And despite all that, the story remains firmly about people - though we must include ducks, raccoons and trees in that catch-all description; as this is still Howard the Duck, where people matter.Note that I have left out some major plot-points here so that you will still be surprised at what goes on despite my revelations above, but at the end of it all, Howard gets to go home…Issue #6 is the second half of the Squirrel Girl crossover, (part one of which is also collected her) and takes place before the start of this volume, which actually opens with a flashback to the end of the crossover, in which Howard acquires a pet cyborg cat, and we meet a prototype from the Weapon X programme - Weapon II, a squirrel with Adamantium claws: “I’m the best there is at what I do, but mostly what I do is gather nuts for winter”.Jim Shooter, a former editor-in-chief at Marvel, once said that Steve Gerber was “probably the best writer to work in comics, but not necessarily the best comic-book writer”, or words to that effect. However, as I keep saying, this book really is a continuation of that series, even though Disney has forced him to wear trousers (that’s what Howard tells us anyway).THE SPOILER ZONEReally - only read this is you have read the original 1970s series, otherwise it won’t make any sense to you....Tara: “Bev?
